Indian Navy plans three aircraft carriers
The Indian Navy plans to acquire at least three aircraft carriers in the next five to seven years in addition to other procurements.
It plans to acquire sea-based assets for littoral warfare, landing platform docks, and long-range maritime surveillance aircraft.
An Indian Defence Ministry news release said quoting Defence Minister A.K. Antony who asked the Navy to increase Navy-to-Navy contact with the littoral countries of the Indian Ocean. This move comes five years after the service incorporated preparation for littoral warfare as part of the Navy’s long term doctrine.
Addressing top Indian military commanders at a meeting in Delhi on Oct. 27, Antony said, “The complex maritime security environment in our region requires the Navy to maintain a state of perpetual readiness operationally. You must factor in the need to be ready at all times prominently, while planning for the future. At the same time, we need to maintain, and even increase, the momentum of our Navy-to-Navy contact with the littoral countries of the Indian Ocean. Such contacts strengthen professional ties and mutual trust, and streamline interoperability issues.”
Antony said New Delhi is committed to the continued deployment of ships and aircraft to improve surveillance off the coast of Maldives and Seychelles to ensure maritime security from piracy.
Antony said, “We also need to engage like-minded African states in the Western Indian Ocean Region, such as Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya, to enhance our strengths and contribute to peace and stability, not only in the Asia-Pacific region, but also in the entire Indian Ocean Region”.

Good news but i think we need at least 8 Aircraft carrier.
What is the percentage of Indigenous components in the new carriers, are they still dominated by foreign agencies
First decide what fighter you want onboard these carriers. And for nation's sake let it not be some 100% foreign fighter please. Wait till UAC/HAL can navalize PAKFA and/or AMCA.
we need more facilities in air craft because the source of our human is big
We should try to build an aircraft carrier of comparable to Nimitz class
we should built one aircraft carrier of type of nimitz class then sold it to russia at a double rate
the m2k deal is a very priced one. not sure why the bovernment is going for it? One the cost per aircraft is more expensive than a new MMRCa aircraft. Two, by the time a new fully upgraded aircraft is ready to use, it is already 3-4 years old out of the proposed 25 years upgrade. not sure if it a wise decision. politics???
well three aircraft carriers are enough to create dominance in INDIAN OCEAN...they will definitely help us in performing defensing and attacking missions and reconnaissance in Indian Ocean, south- east Asia ,Persian Gulf and Arabian sea, while protecting India.
But, i think in order achieve a Blue Navy title, there is a need of two more aircraft carries. TO represent a diplomatic presence and Power of INDIA, all over the world.
And yeah, there is no need to built a carrier like USS Nimitz. US Navy need them because, US geographical location is far away from highly sensitive areas of world like Persian gulf, Arabian sea,China sea etc...therefore, in order to create its AIR SUPERIORITY over these areas US need them badly.
And most important thing is that US NAVY also have to guard NATO countries with these carriers.
their naval activity is more than our NAVY.
What are the prospect of indigenous developments in building aircraft carriers & submarines? Why should we completely rely on foreign nations to hand over their used ships&subs? What's the DRDO doing? The chiefs of the three services are disatisfied by DRDO's sluggish pace? Why a serviceman of the three services is not made chief of DRDO?
